Fall 2017

The strength of our success lies with our people. We’re fortunate to have an outstanding group of dedicated professionals who strive for greatness every day – while making Haynes Furniture a fun place to work! Meet a few members of our team:

Soki Vann

SOKI VANN

SALES ASSOCIATE

"My family owns a custom window treatment & upholstery business that caters to an elite clientele. I learned very quickly that in order to have success in home furnishings and design, I needed to have solid work ethic, identify my client's needs, and be a team player. With over a decade of experience in the design industry, I do more than just sell furniture – I want to instill a sense of passion, both for the unique story behind the furniture itself and for the one it will become a part of, cherished in the home for years to come."

Jessica Baker

JESSICA BAKER

VISUAL ASSOCIATE

"I started working for Haynes Furniture after graduating from Old Dominion University in 2005. I have enjoyed contributing to the visual department at all Haynes locations and I even helped open the Chicago Dump! One thing I can say is there is never a dull moment here. Things are constantly changing and keeping me on my toes. I am a Hampton Roads native, having lived in Chesapeake, Virginia all my life. I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Joe, for 12 years and we have a 3-year-old daughter named Josie."

Lisa Alston

LISA ALSTON

SALES MANAGER

"When I was 15 years old, I begged Harry Weisburg to hire me to work at his store, Home Furniture, in Portsmouth, Virginia. Thankfully, after many attempts, he finally said yes! That was over 30 years ago and furniture has been a part of my DNA ever since. What gives me the passion is the people. In my other life, I volunteer; I coach and teach at-risk youth basic principles to follow for a productive and rewarding life. Watching a teen make the right choice is all the reward I need to know I am adding value to someone's life."

Summer Interns

Class of 2017

We've been fortunate to have a bright and diverse group of interns working with us this summer. They rolled up their sleeves on day one, and we're enjoying learning from each other.

PHOTOGRAPHY

MENTOR-TIM WRIGHT. PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO MANAGER

"I'm a person who usually likes to tackle lots of things at the same time all by myself. But watching Tim and DeAdria (Photography Assistant) work so well together has been an eye opener for me. I've learned to be patient, to take the time to evaluate a scene to correct situations more efficiently. Not to mention the photography principles Tim has demonstrated for me. Applying them in real life has made them easier to understand."

ACCOUNTING

MENTOR-MARY SLONAKER, ASSISTANT CONTROLLER

"I thought I would be doing basic accounting in my internship, just like I learned in my classes at school. Although I can see how my classes tie into some tasks, I have really learned more than I expected by rotating through the different departments that make up accounting at Haynes. I have three upper-level accounting classes coming up in the fall that I am hoping will not be too difficult now that I have had this experience."

HUMAN RESOURCES

MENTOR-TAYLOR HUDGINS, STAFFING SPECIALIST

"I'm getting my masters in HR, and the things that I am learning in this internship-employee relations, talent acquisition and the hiring process-will be exactly what I am learning in college. I've really enjoyed our Communications Task Force meetings because I get to see exactly what's going on throughout the company."

BUYING

MENTOR-STEPHANIE MALLETTE, DIVISIONAL MERCHANDISE MANAGER

"I've learned a lot about myself through this experience-things that I will take with me in my job search. I've also learned that work is difficult. That's why it's called "work," but it can also be fun. It's more fun when you like what you're doing and who you're doing it with. I've learned that a business is a system of moving parts, and they all need to be working together to function. I've witnessed that firsthand through this internship."

HUMAN RESOURCES

MENTOR-TAYLOR HUDGINS, STAFFING SPECIALIST

"I'm working in HR, creating advertising pieces. My best day so far has been when I had the opportunity to meet with Robert Moore, our Vice President of Marketing and Creative. He shared the path he took to get to where he is today and also some lessons he has learned along the way. Robert was also kind enough to review some of my graphic design pieces I was working on and gave me good feedback on each piece."

PLANNING, BUYING, LOGISTICS, OPERATIONS

MENTOR-BOB EAGAN, VICE PRESIDENT OF PLANNING

"I attend an undergraduate business school, so I have taken many business classes in different disciplines, such as marketing, accounting, and statistics. Interning here has shown me how interconnected these subjects are and how all of those different elements must work together to create a successful business. The group intern project has allowed us to really delve into how the consumer interacts with the business."

"The internship and the continuing education courses have been more hands on than I expected, which is really nice. Seeing all the people who volunteered to be mentors shows the passion they have for their work. Their willingness to pass their knowledge on to the interns is amazing. It's something I will definitely do in my career."

SOCIAL MEDIA

MENTOR-CHERYL KEPNER, CREATIVE DIRECTOR

"Working closely with the marketing and advertising division involves more than just being creative and having ideas. It's taught me the value of communication. Effective communication requires listening carefully, not just with ears but with your eyes. I have learned communication requires strategy, a key element in social media. From this internship, I gained relevant experience, industry knowledge, a stronger professional profile, and the opportunity to join a network of dedicated, hard working professionals."
