CHOOSING A NEW RUG
IS EASY

SELECT YOUR SIZE

For the most impact and compatibility, it is important to choose the right size rug for your living space and lifestyle. The size, function and furniture within a space all need to be considered when selecting your rug size.

For larger rooms have the rug go under all the furniture.

DO THIS:

For larger rooms with floating seating, define the space with a large rug that fully fits under everything. If your sofa is against a wall, ensure that at least the front legs of all furniture are on the rug. Skip a too small rug that is only under the coffee table. Your feet should rest on a rug when seated.

SIZE TO CONSIDER:
10’x14’ or 9’x12’

Another option for your living room is to have the rug go underneath the front legs of your furniture, at minimum.

OR THIS:

If your sofa is against a wall, ensure that at least the front legs of all furniture are on the rug.

SIZE TO CONSIDER:
8’x10’ or 5’x8’

It's not a good idea to put a rug as a centerpiece for a living room. Make sure when sitting on a couch, sofa or chair your feet are resting on the rug when seated.

NOT THIS:

Skip a too small rug that is only under the coffee table. Your feet should rest on a rug when seated.

Pick a rug that has plenty of space along the outside to allow guests to comfortably move their chairs in and out from the table.

DO THIS:

Choose a rug that generously holds your table and chairs even when they're pulled out from the table.

SIZE TO CONSIDER:
9'x12' or 8'x10'

Avoid a rug that is too small and barely fits all the dining chairs around it.

NOT THIS:

Avoid a too small rug that barely contains the table and chairs.

Make sure there is plenty of rug space to easily pull out a dining chair to sit down.

DO THIS:

Choose a rug that generously holds your table and chairs even when they're pulled out from the table.

SIZE TO CONSIDER:
7'x7', 8'x8', 9'x9', 10'x10'

If a rug is too small guests can easily trip when trying to be seated or get up from the dining table.

NOT THIS:

If a rug is too small you risk guests tripping on it when pulling out their chairs.

For a large space, choose a large rug that fits under the bed and furniture next to it.

DO THIS:

For a spacious room, opt for a large rug that fits under the entire bed & night tables, with extra space on each side.

You can also choose to pick a rug that is large enough to cover most of under the bed and place it close to the nightstands.

OR THIS:

Place the rug just up to the nightstands for a plush feel underfoot on all sides.

Avoid getting a small rug for the foot of the bed. Ideally you want a rug to be on 3 of the 4 sides of your bed.

NOT THIS:

Avoid using a small rug centered around the foot of the bed. You want softness under your feet ideally on 3 sides.

CHOOSE YOUR MATERIAL

The material that your rug is made from not only heavily informs the aesthetic of the piece, but also affects the price, durability and feel. Consider where and by whom this rug will be used to choose a material best suited to your style and lifestyle.
